Understanding Orbital Speed

AKA: Space Road Trip? Space Road Trip.

So, how ’bout them orbital mechanics, eh? One of the most unintuitive things in the world–er, sorry, off the world. Did you know that pointing straight at something in space often won’t move you towards it? Yeah, orbital mechanics is weird, in no small part because the units are so different from what we’re used to. I don’t know about any of you fine folks, but I certainly have trouble with conceptualising the kind of speeds up there.

Hey, how about we fix that? Introducing, Dee’s Super Scientifical Space Speed Understander-Tron!

Whoa. Those are some crazy speeds. Wouldn’t want to be the poor bastard that got that speeding ticket. And, conversely, I wouldn’t want to try to drive to space in my car. Even my little Swift Sport couldn’t make it to Luna without a couple… hundred… pit stops.

… road trip, anyone?
